Is a dachshund coat essential in the winter? When you have a dachshund, you will notice in the autumn that this breed gets cold quickly. Our dachshund, Sep, starts shivering and trembling regularly around October, when the temperature during the morning and evening walks is already quite cold. For us, this is the sign that his dachshund coats can come out of the closet again. We have noticed that it is difficult to find a good coat for a dachshund. A dachshund has unique body proportions, which means that regular dog coats (sizes S & M) often won’t fit.
Does a dachshund need a coat?
The answer to this is simply: yes. A dachshund is a small animal and gets cold quickly. When a dachshund starts shivering from the cold, it is wise to cover their coat with a jacket. Because a dachshund has short legs, their body is close to the ground during walks. When it’s freezing or has rained, the dachshund will get cold very quickly.
The perfect dachshund winter coat – Winter coats specially designed for dachshunds
During our search for the perfect dachshund coat, we discovered what does and doesn’t work. Since dachshunds often get cold in the winter, our dachshund Sep can’t do without his coat anymore. He has been using Dachshund Couture coats for three years now. These coats may be a bit pricey, but they are of excellent quality. I want to mention that we are not sponsored by this company and have bought these two coats ourselves. Below are photos of Sep in his dachshund coat in two variants:
How do I know what size the dachshund coat should be?
This was a difficult question for us when we first ordered a coat for our dachshund. Fortunately, the Dachshund Couture website has a handy “size chart” that makes it easy to choose the right size.
Dachshund raincoat and other types of coats for dachshunds
Apart from the “dachshund winter coats,” they also have other types of coats, such as dachshund parkas and raincoats for dachshunds. However, we have no experience with these, so we can’t say if they are perfect for dachshunds. Dachshunds, of course, absolutely hate rain, and a dachshund in a raincoat looks super cute! Since dachshund raincoats are often much cheaper than winter coats, you might also try a regular dog raincoat to see if it fits. Check out the dog coats here.
Our Sep is a standard dachshund. If you have a smaller dachshund variant, such as a miniature dachshund, they will get cold even faster in the winter. Dachshund Couture also has coats for miniature dachshunds so they won’t suffer from the cold in winter either.
We hope we have been able to help you a bit in the difficult search for the perfect dachshund coat. Let us know if you have any tips or alternatives yourself, as we are always very interested! If you want to order a dachshund coat from Dachshund Couture but have questions, we are happy to help. Dachshund Couture also has very cute dachshund sweaters to keep your dog warm. Here are our blonde dachshund Obi and our Black & Tan Dachshund Sep in their dachshund sweater:
